Corinna Thoben

Background:
I am a PhD student at the Institute of Data Science in Biomedicine at TU Braunschweig, researching genetic associations in complex, heterogeneous diseases.
With an apprenticeship as software developer, I discovered my interest in bioinformatics during my Bachelor’s in Biotechnology at TU Braunschweig. My bachelor’s thesis involved developing a tool for annotating transcription factor families in plant genomes. I further explored this field as a student assistant by investigating the molecular basis of virus resistance in cassava using comparative genomics.
During my Master’s in Biology, I deepened my understanding of computational biology and became interested in how this field can help us interpret the complexity of biological systems. My thesis evaluated multi-ancestry polygenic risk prediction methods and examined the factors influencing their predictive performance. In my PhD, I continue this line of research, with a focus on genetic subtypes of Major Depressive Disorder and their potential for personalized treatment strategies.
